In response to frequent questions: Earth Day is April 22, and it Falls on the Same Date Every Year. First launched as an environmental awareness event in the United States in 1970, Earth Day (April 22) is celebrated as the birth of the environmental movement. Earth Day is a
powerful catalyst for change in our understanding how to care
for our planet. The first Earth Day, spearheaded by Wisconsin
Governor Gaylord Nelson and Harvard University student Denis Hayes, involved 20
million participants in teach-ins that addressed decades of environmental
pollution. The event inspired the US Congress to pass clean air and water acts,
and establish the Environmental Protection Agency to research and monitor
environmental issues and enforce environmental laws.
With benefit of looking back we can say this was a vital step in
making our planet healthier. There are multitude of www sites designed to suggest activities for this day good example is http://www.kidsdomain.com/holiday/earthday/ (kids activities). Most popular Earth Day events are tree planting, community/school yard/waterway clean up, Eco Festivals / Eco Fairs. Therefore if you feel like making a good gesture to our very own planet, please plant a tree :-). If you do not have a tree wait until end o April, beginning of May when the maples drop their keys, and plant one in a pot on your balcony or in your back yard. Next year you will have a beautiful small tree (whip), ready for planting.
Good Luck from all of us at Stafford Haensli Architects. |
