Mr. Robert Prentice, Commissioner - Parks, Recreation & Culture
The new Magna Centre design started as a basic “Quad Arena” project which transformed through the constructive and diligent input of user groups and council members, into an integrated-user friendly recreation facility reflecting the diverse needs of new communities in the Town of Newmarket.
The facility is laid out along an internal multilevel pedestrian axis anchored by two main entrance points. The design accommodates the sloping site (6.0m) of the original Stickwood-Walker farm and maximizes the street presence through transparent building components as well as capitalizing on long distance axial vistas of the facility along Mulock Drive.
The new facility showcases the following interior elements:
3 NHL size practice arenas
Aquatic Facility with a 25m 8-lane competition pool and separate tank leisure pool
1 Olympic size spectator arena with 1,500 seats
Gymnasium & Walking Track
Sports Medicine Training Facility
Facility energy systems include full heat recovery of all refrigeration rejected heat for domestic hot water, spectator areas heating, etc; by the deployment of the Eco-Chill refrigeration system as well as integrated heat recovery features.
