Mr. Don Crain, Facility Coordinator, Town of South Bruce Peninsula
Wiarton District Community Centre and Arena
The Wiarton Community Centre and Arena is a single pad arena which was constructed in the early 1960’s. The building serves the Town of Wiarton and the entire lower Bruce area (now the Town of South Bruce Peninsula).
The building underwent several minor renovations during its lifespan, however the main building systems remain as originally constructed. Our team was involved with renovating and reorganizing the public areas of the building to make the facility function more efficiently in today’s environment.
The project was driven by the need to replace the existing Refrigerated Arena Slab along with a need for improved Community-Use social facilities, improved Arena Change Rooms and more modern and convenient Public Spaces.
The second floor facilities also require proper access for the physically challenged, through the addition of an elevator.
The main goal was to execute the project within its very tight budget, while also offering the facility a fresh, rejuvenated new community presence both inside and outside, allowing the reconnection of local history as well as the continuation of the famous Wiarton Willie celebrations taking place in this facility.
Main project components:
Arena Rink Slab (replacement)
Arena Change Rooms (6) plus Referee Room
Addition of New Multi-Use Community Rooms (2)
Expansion and Refurbishment of Public Washrooms (4)
Expansion of the Existing Community Hall Kitchen and Bar (upgrading)
Improved Snack Bar, Pro Shop and Arena Office Spaces
