St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Elementary School – Addition & Renovation
The St. Francis of Assisi project involved an addition and renovation to an existing two-storey elementary school. The site is located in an established residential area, backing onto an outdoor municipal swimming pool and playfields and is across the street from a neighborhood church. The main entry and office areas were expanded and improved, and general reconfigurations and upgrades were done throughout the old school.
The Gymnasium was renovated to become the Library, and a new enlarged Gymnasium with change rooms was provided. Additional classrooms were added as an extension of the Second Floor.
An upgrade of the Building Envelope included re-insulation and re-cladding of the exterior walls and replacement of all existing windows. The new addition exterior was designed using decorative block veneer.
The initial project analysis according to previous reports indicated the potential use of Siporex Roofing Panels in the existing portion of the school, requiring further testing under vacant conditions. Onsite investigations (after demolition & vacant condition) indicated the need for further structural reinforcing, and therefore the project scope of work was adjusted to include new structural slabs in all areas where Siporex panels were used.
