Mr. Jerry Stoangi, Manager of Plant Services, York Region District School Board
Woodland Public School – Replacement School
This Elementary School project located at 120 Royal Orchard Blvd. in Markham involved the development of Feasibility Alternatives for the redevelopment or replacement of the existing 380 student school on the same site. Stafford Haensli Architects Inc. assisted with the York Region District School Board Consultation Process involving Community Representatives and School Representatives. Replacement of the school was recommended in the end due to a combination of the financial “non-feasibility” of removing hazardous substances from the existing building as well as functional limitations.
The project is located in an established residential neighbourhood occupying a North South direction sloped site, bordering a tributary naturalized area to the west which conveniently divides the drop off and pick-up area for students into two smaller, more manageable parts. Unique site storm water management design (onsite underground water storage system-Atlantis) allowed for 50% reduction of predevelopment flows.
